Designing learning experiences with the Social Sciences
ASSEN is getting ready to support you in 2024! We've got an outstanding venue for a full day workshop in Te Whanganui-a-Tara on 24 January.
The 6 hour workshop will take kaiako through a planning process that ASSEN has been developing and refining throughout 2023, focusing on designing a sequence of experiences that centre the Understand-Know-Do of the Social Sciences Learning Area, including Aotearoa's histories curriculum. We want you to know that we've listened to the feedback from all the kaiako and leaders who attended one of our PLD events in 2023 and this workshop will be a revised version of our Term 4 half and full day workshops. We will also model the process through a new theme that will be localised to our venue, Pukeahu Education Centre.

UPDATE: Term 4 workshops revised
Designing learning experiences with the Social Sciences
ASSEN is sorry to announce that the majority of our half day workshops will not be going ahead in Term 4 2023. The sign up rate has been far too low for us to make them a viable option for our team. We look to continue our support of kaiako and leaders of all learning phases from years 1-10 through a series of webinars that will be recorded and made available on our membership site. If you have paid for a workshop that is no longer running, you will be fully refunded. Maria will be in contact with you.
We plan to move ahead with four half day workshops if we can get enough kaiako to sign up for these. Each 3 hour workshop will take kaiako through a planning process that ASSEN has been developing and refining throughout 2023, focusing on designing a sequence of experiences that centre the Understand-Know-Do of the Social Sciences Learning Area, including Aotearoa's histories curriculum.
These workshops are:
In addition, we are offering a full day workshop on 20 November for kaiako in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
Click the button below for more information and to sign up for one of the workshops. All workshops are contingent on getting a large enough group of kaiako committing to attend.

PLD course for leading the social sciences refresh
Implementing the Curriculum
ASSEN is pleased to announce that registrations for the leading social sciences courses are now open. This year, we will host the course twice.
Opportunities to do things differently abound for us as leaders of learning in the social sciences. This is exciting and challenging. This two-day course is designed to support primary, intermediate and secondary kaiako who have responsibilities for leading the planning and implementation of the refreshed social sciences learning area, including Aotearoa New Zealand's histories curriculum.
Over the two days, participants will have multiple opportunities to engage with the social sciences learning area through He Pā Harakeke, a Kaupapa Māori informed generative process to support the implementation of the new curriculum. ASSEN and NZHTA have developed He Pā Harakeke specifically for this purpose. The course will consist of workshops to model He Pā Harakeke in practice and provide significant time for participants to apply it to their own teaching and learning contexts. There will be workshops for progress outcome level groupings, as well as sessions for cross sector engagement. We will also shine a light on weaving numeracy and literacy teaching and learning through the social sciences. Transformative change for teaching and learning, kaiako, ākonga, whānau and communities - that’s our vision!

ASSEN is looking for kaiako to join our team
We have multiple projects on the go and need our team to grow in order to deliver on our contract with the Ministry of Education. We are creating one or more fixed-term contracts (or secondments) to meet these needs.

PLD course for middle leaders
Reimagining the Curriculum
ASSEN is pleased to announce that registrations for the middle leaders course are now open. The hui will be at Tiakiwai Conference Centre, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington in the first week of the term two holidays - 12 & 13 July 2022.
Opportunities to do things differently abound for us as leaders of learning in the social sciences. This is exciting and challenging. This two day course is designed to support primary, intermediate and secondary kaiako in middle leadership positions - DPs, APs, HODs, team leaders, curriculum leaders - to reimagine the possibilities of the curriculum through effective social science education that is grounded in culturally responsive practice.
The course will offer experiences that will inspire, challenge and engage you with the Understand, Know, Do model of the new Aotearoa New Zealand histories curriculum and how that sits within the wider social sciences learning area. Transformative change for teaching and learning, kaiako, ākonga, whānau and communities - that’s our vision!
